 Woolworths was founded in 1924. On December 5, 1924, the 
first store was opened in the basement of Imperial Arcade in Sydney. 
The advertisement for the store opening, which appeared in several newspapers 
read "Every city needs a Woolworths: Sydney has it now. Every man, woman, and 
child needs a handy place where good things are cheap."... 
Environmental Responsibility
Environmental sustainability was a key aspect of Woolworths' CSR approach. As 
Woolworths was in the retail business, its operations affected the environment 
in many ways such as waste production, high energy and fuel consumption, and 
greenhouse gas emissions due to the use of refrigeration and air conditioning 
equipment, etc...

		Woolworths' retail operations accounted for around 0.66 percent of 
		Australia's total greenhouse emissions . In 2006, Woolworths' greenhouse 
		emissions were approximately 3.7 million tons of CO2-e (carbon dioxide 
		equivalent) , out of which approximately 2.6 million tons were due to 
		electricity consumption through refrigeration, lighting, and air
